Tasting Notes

To search tasting notes for a particular wine either use the search box or select a wine category from the menu above.

Each quarter, Kel writes a letter to our Summit Cru members and includes tasting notes for each varietal he hand picks to go into each dozen. As there is cellaring time suggested (we can only suggest) for each variety, you may want to read over some notes to refresh your memory or to see what you have to look forward to if you have been well restrained enough to actually cellar your wines.

2008 Shiraz

Region: Boynton’s Vineyard, Alpine Valleys, North East Victoria

Colour: Deep garnet

Aroma: A cool climate Shiraz grown in deep and ancient river stone. It oozes aromas and flavours of ripe blackberry, blood plums, sweet vanillin oak, black pepper & soft tannins.

Palate: The mid palate is fruit driven and rounded, the finish is rich and beautifully balanced with soft fine tannins. I love this wine. Every bit as good as the ’06. In fact I think it is more elegant and better structured.

Analysis: Alcohol 14.0%        pH: 3.5        TA: 6.0 g/l

Cellaring: Cellar up to ten years

Serving suggestion: This impressive wine would hold its own with a seared well aged rib eye.

2008 Pinot Noir

Region: Steep Hill, Boynton’s Vineyard, Alpine Valleys, North East Victoria

Colour: Mid garnet, quite dark for a Pinot. Enticing, even alluring.

Aroma: I can smell the trademark cherry, both the red and the dark types. I don’t see a lot of strawberry which suits me as I think this reflects unripe fruit. There is a touch of spiciness there but I can’t really define what spice or spices. Hay fever is giving me a lot of grief!

Palate: Fairly big for a Pinot but its not alcoholic or a “dry red” style. It is smooth, round and soft with a good dose of fine tannins making their presence felt at the end of the palate. Obviously a young wine that will benefit from ageing for a further 3 to 5 years if you’re capable.

Analysis: Alcohol 12.8%        pH: 3.7        TA: 6.5 g/l

Serving suggestion: Char grilled or BBQ chicken, roast duck, quail, veal or perhaps a cassolette. Those sorts of dishes, your choice.

2009 Pinot Gris

Region: Boynton’s Vineyard, Alpine Valleys, North East Victoria

Colour: White Gold

Aroma: Aromas and flavours include honeysuckle, pear, peach and anise. This is a lovely clean, fruit driven wine oozing ripeness and complexity.

Palate: When I first tasted this wine prior to fermentation I was excited because it looked so good, so full of fruit flavours. After fermentation for some reason it appeared a bit thin – more like a Grigio style. Now that it is in bottle and I’m writing tasting notes I’m happy to say that my initial summary was correct and that it is true to the style of my previous vintages.

Analysis: Alcohol 13.5%        pH: 3.32        TA: 6.5 g/l

Cellaring: Perfect to drink now. Best chilled

Serving suggestion: Devine with a char grilled salmon and a whole host of dishes like pasta and right through to Thai green curry.

2009 Chardonnay Vermentino

Region: Boynton’s Vineyard, Alpine Valleys, North East Victoria

Colour: Light Straw

Aroma: Because the biggest part of the blend is Chardonnay it has dominated the aroma although there is just a touch of citrus there if you look hard enough.

Palate: Again the bigness of the Chardonnay comes through and what is really surprising is that the wine almost tastes of oak although I can assure you the closest it got to a barrel was when I pumped the blend past an empty one!  The Vermentino has definitely influenced the palate giving it a lift and making the wine a bit zippier.

Analysis: Alcohol 13.2%, pH: 3.4, TA: 6.5 g/l

Cellaring: Drink now, chilled

Serving suggestion: I’d try it with some traditional seafood dishes of Sardinia.

2001 Feathertop Reserve Shiraz Blend Terraces

92%Shiraz, 8% Petite Syrah (Durif)

Water borne deposits of stone, gravel and soil have formed mini plateaux or Terraces. Shiraz and Petite Syrah grow fabulously well in this terrroir, always ripening earlier with higher concentration of colour, tannin and sugar. Great wine! Winner of a Silver medal at the International Wine and Spirits show in London UK.
